Mick Cayirylys
Portrait artist and teacher exploring story, culture and community.
Artist Statement
Mick Cayirylys is born and bred in the small town of Moree, NSW. Surrounded by the wide-open spaces and the sounds of rural life, Mick’s artistic journey began at a young age, inspired by the creative influence of his mother, a talented multidisciplinary artist in her own right.
Known for his deep fascination with people and their stories, Mick’s work often draws on historical figures, cultural values, and his own life experiences. He’s also an avid student of ancient Hebrew and Aramaic, which has given him a unique perspective and often influences his choice of subjects, weaving ancient wisdom into his modern approach.
Mick’s core artistic practice revolves around portraiture, where he expertly wields chalks, pastels, and graphite to capture the essence of his subjects. But don’t let that fool you—he’s a man who’s never afraid to step outside his comfort zone. Whether he’s teaching art in his local community or diving into new mediums, Mick’s versatility shines through. His recent explorations include painting rustic court yards and playful, yet thought-provoking, neurological art.
In the classroom, he engages both neurodivergent kids and neurotypical students through the therapeutic power of art, fostering creativity and connection. As a teacher, Mick’s approach is as much about discovery as it is about learning, encouraging students to find their own artistic voices while exploring new ways to express themselves.
